Porter brook
Labels: Trule, Groundwork
Porter Brook forged his practice in the crucible of Sheffield’s low-end industrialism.
With two releases on Sheffield’s cult label and night Groundwork at the age of 17 (both engineered by Forgemaster’s Rob Gordon), Porter’s sound was already sonically aligned with the Steel City way back in 2019. He soon held a residency at Hope Works and No Bounds festival, using these opportunities to expand on the influences of his youth.
His sound blossomed further, finding a place on Al Wootton’s cult label Trule in 2023 to underground acclaim.
The following year, Porter co-founded Second Born, a DIY label and multimedia arts platform aimed at giving young, emerging artists space to develop their practice, free from the pressures and constraints of an increasingly online and conformist club landscape. His inaugural release on the label, produced using the live coding language Tidal Cycles, garnered widespread praise. A successful launch event at Venue MOT set the project’s strobe-washed vision of things to come.
As a DJ, Porter deftly balances an auteur-like approach to experimental electronics with an instinctive understanding of the dancefloor—no doubt the result of an adolescence spent immersed in northern club music and years of playing clubs and off-locations across the UK and Europe.
The result is an exhilarating amalgamation of sensations, both intoxicating and, at times, disconcerting—a sonic rush to the head.
